Democracy Corps conducted a web survey of 2,234 voters from August 1 to August 10, 2024, in key battlegrounds for the presidential, House, and Senate races. The data includes a representative sample of 1,364 registered voters and oversamples of Black, Hispanic, and Asian American voters, weighted to reflect the projected 2024 electorate.
Despite 64% wanting change due to high prices, border issues, and crime, Kamala Harris holds a 3-point lead, with strong favorability among liberal and moderate Democrats. Harris leads Trump on fighting elites, women’s rights, and climate change, while Republicans gain traction on the economy, border, and crime. Both candidates’ messages resonate, but Harris’s focus on economic fairness, big oil, and empowering the middle class could shift the dynamic.
Harris’s positive favorability contrasts sharply with President Biden, particularly among voters who strongly support her over Trump. While she performs well with key demographics such as Black voters, Asians, white millennials, and unmarried and college-educated women, there is room for improvement with Hispanic and white Gen Z voters, crucial for winning states like Nevada and Texas. Trump’s base shows high engagement, but the challenge lies in attracting new voters, particularly among Republicans who only somewhat support Trump.
The strongest attacks from worries on Project 2025 policies are cutting Social Security and implementing a national abortion ban, while her messaging on economic progress, taxing billionaires, and targeting corporate greed resonates powerfully.
